Remember way back about 10 or 15 years ago when the only freebies going around were cans of soft drink and cheesy caps, handed out by Triple M’s ‘Black Thunder’ cars on the street? When you had to actually, physically, line up for your freebie out in the cold after a football game, goosebumps popping up from excitement and anticipation, only to hear as you got to the front of the queue, ‘Sorry folks, we’re all out, but tune in on Friday for the next location!’
Ah, you’re thinking, those were the good old days! (Well I’m thinking that, anyway. Once I even got a free pie. It tasted a bit like dog, but hey, you never knew what pie shops in Adelaide put in their pies back then.)
The thing is, nobody gets their freebies in person any more. We all go on the Internet now, fill out a registration form or maybe a little questionnaire, and then either we receive the freebie in the mail, or we – drum roll – *download* it!
Everyone loves a freebie. Our Free Stuff page on MoneySaver.com.au is the second most visited page on the site after the home page. We’re averaging one or two freebies a day at the moment, but give it a few months and it will *explode* with freebies, I’m sure! Give us time, darlings, give us time. It’s still a young site.
So how do you find these freebies, you ask? Well you generally have to be pro-active about it. My recommendation is to sign up to an RSS feed of your favourite freebie-toting sites, or simply bookmark the sites and check them regularly. Good sites for freebies are:

And for competitions, you can’t go past Shopper’s Bonus. Unlike some competition sites, it’s free to sign up and brings competitions straight to your inbox.
My other piece of advice about freebies is to exercise moderation and take care you’re not going to waste your freebie. Do you really need a cat food sample if you don’t own a cat? Do you really need a Huggies sample if you don’t own a child? Etc. It’s one thing to love freebies, but another thing to be undiscerning about which freebies you actually want. Think of the environment!^
